A personsa国际传媒 address is as important as their physical fitness and commitment when applying to become a paid on-call firefighter in sa国际传媒.听

Candidates must live or work within three kilometres of these stations, where vacancies are currently available: No. 7 3275 Gulley Rd., No. 8. 550 Valley Rd., and No. 9 2186 Bennett Rd.听

Once a year, the city recruits paid on-call firefighters to supplement the professional full-time force. This yearsa国际传媒 recruitment drive is underway until Oct. 31, with an information session to be held Oct. 23 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the main firehall, 2255 Enterprise Way.听

To be accepted for the training program, recruits must be at least 19, pass a physical job performance assessment, participate in an interview, pass a medical exam, and participate in an interview. Chances of success are higher if a person has some first-aid training, a work background in construction or trades, holds a Class 3 licence, and is available for calls during the day.听

The eight-week training program runs three evenings a week, with those selected to participate being paid $18 an hour. If invited to become a paid-on call firefighter, people must practice at least 56 hours a year, and respond to at least 20 per cent of the calls they receive on a pager.听

The aim of some paid on-call firefighters is to eventually land a full-time job. In 2021, the start rate for a city firefighter was $33.29 per hour. Most firefighters make between $100,000 and $120,000, with higher pay for captains and lieutenants.听

In 2023, there were 140 people employed full-time by the sa国际传媒 Fire Department, the number having significantly increased in recent years with plans for a new hall in Glenmore.听
