Flora Cannabis hopes to win city rezoning approval for a property at 2009 Enterprise Way near the Hardy Street intersection for a cannabis store. The company already has three such stores in sa国际传媒 and three elsewhere in sa国际传媒听

鈥淲e employ approximately 25 young adults locally, fostering personal and professional development through structured sales training, mentorship, and competitive compensation,鈥 company president Mathew Dober writes in the rezoning application to the city.听

The proposal is currently being considered by city staff. There is no date yet for when city council will consider the matter.听

According to the government, there are 19 provincially-approved cannabis stores open in sa国际传媒.听A slightly higher number of properties have received the necessary rezoning, but do not as yet have a pot shop on the site.听听

In 2022, when 23 sa国际传媒 properties had been rezoned to allow cannabis sales in the city, municipal staff suggested that was enough. The assessment came in a report in which staff recommended council not approve pot sales for a location in the Willow Park mall in Rutland.听

鈥(T)here are a sufficient number of approved establishments across the city to serve overall need,鈥 planner Kimberly Brunet wrote in a report to council.听

Councillors voted 6-2 not to approve that rezoning, the application for which had also been submitted by Dober of Flora Cannabis.听

One particular issue with that application was its proximity within a 500-metre separation zone council had set for pot shops. At that meeting, Dober noted the city had previously waived that rule with other pot shop applications.听

Cannabis store proposals have generated some controversy among councillors. Coun. Charlie Hodge, for example, has consistently said the city shouldn鈥檛 limit their number because the city doesn鈥檛 take that approach with most other businesses.听

Other councillors, however, have noted the city does apply a separation rule for retail liquor stores, and saying a similar approach regarding pot shops is reasonable to avoid the clustering of such businesses in any given area.听

Government records show there are two pot shops in Peachland, five in West sa国际传媒, one in Lake Country, and eight in Penticton.听
