Desperation by BC United

Dear Editor:

We have all heard the phrase 鈥渄esperate times call for desperate measures鈥 but the BC United position to cut income taxes in sa国际传媒 is all out desperation and one of the most ridiculous suggestions I have heard even from politicians.

Sure, we all hate taxes but unfortunately that is how we fund education, health care and all the other services we rely on and make our lives better.

Most certainly there is a lot of waste in the way government manages our money and that is where the focus should be, not with outrageous statements.

Seemed like a good idea

Dear Editor:

How did we get to this point?

We have an article from dated Feb. 2, 2021 telling about a Zoom Open House that was held in January 2021.

That Virtual Open House expected occupancy of the new UBCO Downtown Campus in September 2024. 聽

Here we are in August 2024. 聽

Instead of celebrating the new campus at 550 Doyle Avenue with 20 floors and presumably an above-ground parkade, we have the next-door neighbours to 550 Doyle Avenue facing a forced move to who knows where. 聽

The ones who are causing that move have left the residents of the Hadgraft Wilson Place building at 1360 Bertram Street to do their own packing and moving to a place that is likely much more expensive or much smaller than where they were before. 聽

We have a gigantic hole in the ground surrounded part-way by buildings that need to be demolished because of that hole in the ground.

There is a short YouTube video from sa国际传媒 Now from 聽June 3, 聽2020. Search: New UBCO campus in downtown sa国际传媒. 聽

The concept plan and drawings looked good. 聽

What happened?

A sense of entitlement

Dear Editor:

Russiasa国际传媒 Vladimir Putin hypocritically criticizes then punishes Ukraine when the lattersa国际传媒 forces dare to strike back against Russiasa国际传媒 deliberate targeting and killing of civilians and destruction of infrastructure with barrages of missiles or drones.

According to his own words, Putin is astonished and angry, as though Ukraine really has no right to self-defense. It reveals a great yet misplaced sense of entitlement by Putin, indeed the classical high-school bully whose concept of his fair share was always three-quarters of the pie.

Putin has even absurdly justified Russiasa国际传媒 atrocious invasion of Ukraine as a necessity of 鈥榙e-nazifying鈥 the latter nationsa国际传媒 democratically elected government. I say, first 鈥榙e-nazify鈥 Russiasa国际传媒 Kremlin and presidency, as they are in bed with far-right European political parties like the German AfD.

Wheresa国际传媒 the public outcry?

Dear Editor:

I have the perfect solution for the people of the Hardgraf Wilson building in sa国际传媒. These folks have been jostled from pillar to post for the last several months and it is time it stopped. These folk , as of Thursday, have nowhere else to go and some of them have already ended up on the street. 聽

There is a building on St. Paul Street called Brooklyn.聽 Lots of accommodation available and UBCO should pay the difference in rent for as long as it takes.聽 I find that it is totally (please excuse my language) stupid of UBCO to think that they can have five storeys of underground parking when there are three parking garages within a few blocks of Doyle and none of them have underground parking. 聽

Maybe itsa国际传媒 because there is a lake just a few blocks away! Not too many of the other high-rise apartment buildings have underground parking.

What was the City of sa国际传媒 thinking when they okayed this project. Oh thatsa国际传媒 right they just saw the dollars signs and that was good enough.

I cannot understand why there has not been more of an outcry from the people of sa国际传媒 regarding this issue.聽 Just wait until the next civic election. 聽

Some of us have good memories. 聽

Fruit Trees loss is huge

Dear Editor:

Re: 鈥淔iddling while Rome burns,鈥 by Rick Knodel (Aug. 14).

I concur wholeheartedly with Mr. Knodel. The Interior of BC might not matter in Victoria but the loss of BC Tree Fruits is huge!

Why can鈥檛 the government do something smart for once and pick up the ball!

The facility is sitting there unused, plenty of laid off people to entice back with a decent wage, never mind the branding loss. Take it over for a year and figure the rest out.

sa国际传媒 food production matters!

Health-care workers shine

Dear Editor:

I just spent a week in Victoria General Hospital recovering from a stroke.

I would like to thank all the classy people who cared for me during that time and congratulate the hospital on the 颅quality of care the professionals there provided to me.
