Go out and vote and don鈥檛 bully
Dear Editor:
I have a few basic comments on the recent letter titled 鈥淪hutting Down Discussion鈥 (Sept. 19).

First, bullying and intimidation are not discussion.
Second, Tina Leesa国际传媒 response did not 鈥渞idicule anyone鈥.
Finally, 鈥渄emocracy鈥 gives everyone the right to vote for whatever political party they choose and this is a much better response than resorting to bullying and intimidation.

Letsa国际传媒 hear it for Naramata!
Dear Editor:
Re: 鈥淏erry and Smith celebrate 70 years,鈥 by Keith Lacey (Herald, Page A1, Sept. 26).
Great story about Berry and Smithsa国际传媒 70th anniversary. A fine local company started and still run by a fine Naramata family!

Kudos. I would like to congratulate Dr. Harrington, Mr. Bartsch and Ms. St. Claire for adhering to the City of Penticton election signage bylaw 2022-28.

Did NDP handle COVID properly?
Dear Editor:
In his letter to the editor Andy Richards make some erroneous claims regarding the effectiveness of the COVID mRNA vaccines (Sept. 24).听
He says he and his friends think the vaccine was ineffective because despite getting the shots, they still got COVID. 听
Thatsa国际传媒 not the point -- I take it he did not end up in the hospital and his letter implies he didn鈥檛 die from COVID. 听
The vaccines were never promoted as ensuring you would not get COVID; they were promoted as greatly reducing the chances of you being hospitalized or dying from the disease.
There is lots of information available from the U.S. CDC, Canadian sources and other peer reviewed articles (COVID-19 outcome trends by vaccination status in Canada, December 2020-January 2022鈥揚ublic Health Agency of Canada published in volume 50-1/2, January-February 2024; United States: COVID-19 weekly death rate by vaccination status 鈥 Our World in data:听, and others)

The data from numerous countries (U.S., Switzerland, England, Chile, Canada and more) show that the death rates for unvaccinated people were anywhere from 3 to 8 times greater than for those who had been vaccinated.

Similarly, the data show that hospitalization rates for vaccinated people were lower than for unvaccinated.

So the fact that Mr. Richards is here to disseminate false information is proof that in his case the vaccine did what it was intended to do -- it kept him from dying from COVID-19! 听

Score one for science!

We all respect Tommy Douglas
Dear Editor:
Re: NDP tossing around our $$$ (letters, Sept. 24)
In his letter, Greg Snider refers to the BC NDPsa国际传媒 鈥渟ocialist/Marxist tactics鈥.

He also writes: 鈥淭he NDP socialists, who border on communism, need to go.鈥
Border on communism? Yeah, right.

Widely described as social democratic, the NDP sits at the centre-left to left-wing of the Canadian political spectrum. The federal NDPsa国际传媒 constitution states that both social democracy and democratic socialism are influences on the party.

In modern practice, social democracy is mainly -- wait for it -- capitalist.

Then there is Snidersa国际传媒 Sept. 6 letter (Bribing us with our own money) in which he declares: 鈥淲e can see right through you trying to buy our votes this fall, Comrade Eby.鈥

鈥淐omrade鈥 Eby? Wow.

In the United States, the disgraced, twice-impeached, four-times-indicted ex-president Donald Trump posted a video of himself on his social media account saying: 鈥淐omrade Kamala Harris is terrible for our country, absolutely terrible.
She is a communist, has always been a communist and will always be a communist.鈥

A few questions for Mr. Snider:

1. Do you agree with Donald Trump that Kamala Harris is a communist?
2. If you were an American citizen, would you vote for Trump in the November election? If yes, why? If no, why not?
3. In 1944, the Saskatchewan government (CCF) of premier Tommy Douglas was North Americasa国际传媒 first socialist government, and pioneered Medicare (Saskatchewan Medical Care Insurance Act, 1961). In 1966, the federal government followed suit with the Medical Care Act.
Do you think Canadasa国际传媒 universal health care system should be scrapped in favour of a private health care system?
4. Isn鈥檛 Canadasa国际传媒 Old Age Security (OAS) also a form of socialism?
In 2004, a CBC Television program named Tommy Douglas 鈥淭he Greatest Canadian,鈥 based on a Canada-wide, viewer-supported survey. Marathon of Hope runner Terry Fox placed second, followed by Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. In all, 1.2 million votes were cast.

False narrative on the pandemic
Dear Editor:
John Rustad and his Conservative supporters are again regurgitating their grievances over sa国际传媒sa国际传媒 COVID restrictions.
Rustad is promising to exact revenge on Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry by firing her if hesa国际传媒 elected. She is arguably one of Canadasa国际传媒 most respected public health officials.
Thatsa国际传媒 in addition to his promise to kneecap sa国际传媒sa国际传媒 health care system by significantly increasing for-profit, private clinics , thus luring more doctors out of the publicly funded system.

Rustad and his supporters seem to think that Bonnie Henry deliberately misled us about vaccine effectiveness. They accuse her of imposing masking, vaccine requirements and other COVID measures not to protect us from a pandemic disease that was killing millions of people world wide and overwhelming our hospitals, but instead to exert some kind of control over peoplesa国际传媒 freedom.

These sound like the views of those small groups that used to stand by the roadside waving signs last year. People who have 鈥渄one their own research鈥 and thus know better than medical doctors who study and treat infectious diseases.

I don鈥檛 want them to have the power to tamper with sa国际传媒 health care. I鈥檒l be voting for the saner alternative next month.

Premier Ebysa国际传媒 magic wand
Dear Editor:
Premier David Eby has promised British Columbians that if we re-elect him and his team on Oct. 19 that every British Columbian will have a primary care physician by 2026.

If Premier Eby has the solution to this vexing problem such that he guarantees itsa国际传媒 resolution within as little as 15 months, why has he not already done so?
