Great editorial cartoon by Greg Perry
Dear Editor:
Congratulations听to cartoonist Greg Perry for capturing the essence of Pierre Poilievre: heavy on blaming and name-calling and light on practical solutions for Canadians (Sept. 18).
Poilievre Is the kind of guy who truly believes poor kids should not have access to dental care and would rip it away from them once hesa国际传媒 elected.
Heresa国际传媒 the thing: until Canada got national dental care and pharmacy care, folks on welfare gave up those benefits if they joined the ranks of the working poor. Apparently, that is what Poilievre wants. It is not only policy-light, it is wrong-headed.
Keep blame-game politics south of the border. Build Canada up, Mr. Poilievre, by adopting policies that will do just that.

Appalled by Tina Leesa国际传媒 treatment
Dear Editor:
I was appalled to read about the harassment of the meeting in Summerland on Sunday featuring Corky Evans and Tina Lee, the NDP candidate.
A difference of political opinion is one thing, but bullying and intimidation quite another. It is apparently not a one-off, as political candidates are increasingly requiring security protection.
This election is important, especially since the BCUP folded in favour of the Conservatives. I have looked at Rustadsa国际传媒 Conservative platform and history, and it would be a big step backwards in addressing climate change, funding for health care and assurance of womensa国际传媒 health options, and general respect for human rights.
Unfortunately, not just some of the ideas but the vitriol we see in the MAGA U.S., seems to have rubbed off on Canada. The best way to counter this is to speak up, insist on civility, and vote for people like Tina Lee who support progressive changes.
Surely we can do better.

Shutting down the discussion
Dear Editor:
Victoria Whiteheadsa国际传媒 recent letter accurately describes a recent NDP event hosted by candidate Tina Lee in Summerland. We tried to attend the event, but were denied access and not given any reason.
We feel compelled to respond to Ms. Leesa国际传媒 hate-fueled attack on democracy-minded folks (letters, Sept. 18).听 It appears that her years of working for Richard Cannings has left her well prepared to obstruct democracy and ridicule anyone who might have a different opinion. 听
Letsa国际传媒 have a look at her letter to deconstruct her outright falsehoods. 听
Ms.听 Lee mentions 鈥渄isrupted NDP event for years鈥 and goes on to mention 鈥渁ggressive and physical intimidation鈥 yet fails to give any real examples.听
Perhaps Ms. Lee incorrectly equates a few signs and some difficult questions as aggression and disruption. 听
She writes that her public event was a 鈥渃ommunity conversation鈥, but how can it be a true community event if only those with her views are allowed to attend? How does excluding anyone fit in with the NDPsa国际传媒 version of diversity and inclusion?
Ms. Lee goes on to report that, 鈥淭his group of four, three of which are noted as security concerns for our MPsa国际传媒 office鈥︹, but fails to give any examples.听 She simply cannot tolerate dissenting views. Even Richard Cannings had said publicly that he will not meet with anyone who does not share his views. 听
Once again, she comes up empty handed in her vitriolic attack. She digs her self deeper in her intolerance when she states, 鈥淲e simply do not agree with their 鈥5G misinformation, anti-vaccination stance and anti-SOGI 123 agenda鈥.
Her name calling (鈥渃onspiracy theorists鈥) is simply an underhanded way of trying to shut down the discussion on matters of great public interest.
As for her false claim of 鈥渉ate speech鈥, does she mean signs that said 鈥渢his is not democracy鈥 or 鈥淣eedles Drugs and Poverty?鈥 听She falsely states there were 鈥渆scalating disturbances鈥. 听
There was no escalation, no foul language and no heckling.听 No safety concerns. 听
Also very unfortunate that she did not mention that the RCMP gave her group a nice verbal spanking for advertising a 鈥減ublic鈥 event and then excluding members of the public. 听
The RCMP did a good job and should be commended. She also failed to mention that some NDP sympathizers who showed up without any preregistration were allowed entry. 听
Ms. Lee goes on to state that, 鈥淚 value these conversations as part of the democratic process鈥 yet her actions are at odds with her claim.听 She simply values conversations that align with her own beliefs and will not allow any dissenting views. How compatible is her approach with democracy and her candidacy for our local MLA?
In summary, we certainly cannot trust Ms. Lee. Her track record with Mr. Cannings supports our lack of trust.

Great job by Parks and Rec
Dear Editor:
Thank you to the City of sa国际传媒sa国际传媒 Parks and Recreation.
The gardens along the beach access at Bluebird Beach are the most beautiful I have seen in 22 years.
Thank you to the City of sa国际传媒 for providing such outstanding gardening for the pleasure of her citizens.

No evidence of criminality found
Dear Editor:
A lot of nonsense has been published about the proposed release by Library and Archives Canada of a list prepared by the Commission of Inquiry on War Criminals, headed by Mr. Justice Jules Desch锚nes.
Supposedly, this document identifies 鈥淣azi war criminals.鈥 In truth, it provides information about persons investigated by the Commission, but against whom no evidence of wartime criminality was found.
Letsa国际传媒 consider a few cases.
Case No. 417 involved a man who bragged he had served in a 鈥淣azi Deathsa国际传媒 Head Unit.鈥 His confession was voiced as he was being arrested for impaired driving.
Case No. 303, involved 鈥済rave allegations鈥 about a person condemned for involvement in 鈥渘umerous executions.鈥 He came to Canada in 1926, aged about two.
Case No. 671 was a fellow who 鈥渂ragged about his supposed involvement in war crimes in an Eastern European country.鈥 Investigators determined 鈥渢he subject is mentally deranged and that his self-incriminations are false.鈥
Likewise Case No. 54.1 was about a supposed SS man in a West European country who 鈥渂oasted of killing Jews and others.鈥 The citizen who submitted this name proved to be 鈥渙f an advanced age and for some time had been in a state of confusion.鈥
Over 80 cases were initiated by Simon Wiesenthal, about veterans of the 鈥淕alicia Division.鈥 Yet Mr. Desch锚nes noted 鈥渘o specific allegation or evidence鈥 was submitted.鈥
As for the Los Angeles-based Simon Wiesenthal Center, Justice Desch锚nes observed: 鈥溾he Centersa国际传媒 information was long on allegations and generalities, and short on evidence and specifics.鈥
A detailed examination of the 774 names on the Commissionsa国际传媒 鈥淢aster List鈥 brought about a 鈥渄ramatic decrease鈥 in the number of alleged war criminals because, as Mr. Desch锚nes found, 鈥渇or many of them, the allegations on the surface could not bear scrutiny.鈥
Most of the Commissionsa国际传媒 subjects are long dead. They cannot defend themselves. Of those who came under official scrutiny, 96% had no idea they were even being investigated. Any disclosure of their names would expose family members and descendants to unwarranted obloquy.
Mr. Justice Desch锚nes understood this. He wrote: 鈥淭he Commission has not been created to revive old hatred that once existed abroad between communities which should now live in peace in Canada.鈥 He ordered the names be kept confidential. This was not a cover-up.
It is evidence of Mr. Desch锚nessa国际传媒 judiciousness and good sense.

No, things were worse before 鈥05
Dear Editor:
鈥淲as life better in 2015?鈥 (letters, Sept. 17)
Warning: the contents of the following may be disturbing to those preferring threeword slogans.
As some of us find our memory failing, please start your search engines.

2015?听 Uh uh.听 Letsa国际传媒 go back 鈥渘ine long years鈥 听to 2006.
Harpersa国际传媒 Senate: Gerstein: bag man, attempted to stymie Deloittesa国际传媒 Senate audit, engineered Mike Duffy payout. Duffy PEI senator, no actual residence. Wallin-Saskatchewan. Ditto.听 Brazeau, on the strength of a vacant corner lot in Quebec. Fortier, Smith, Manning, ran for Conservative seats, lost, appointed senators. Finley, master mind of the In and Out Scandal. Meredith, supposed 鈥減astor鈥, sex scandal. Harper aide, Nigel Wright, of 鈥済ood to go鈥 infamy, Duffysa国际传媒 benefactor. Thatsa国际传媒 just the short list.

MPs: again just the 鈥渟hort list鈥... Election fraud, two Manitoba MPs (one of whom had a Manitoba reporter on a small newspaper fired, for reporting the truth about him), both avoided suspension by hastily paying up after the fact. Not so resourceful were an East Coast MP or an Ontario MP who was led out in shackles and sent to jail.听 The entertaining MP who answered every question with a rambling tale of lemonade stands, eventually leaving the House in tears, found in Contempt of Parliament, accompanied by the revelation he was allegedly stiffing his own mother and sisters. 听

The MP of fake lake and gazebo, and misused funds, achieving a colourful 鈥渢exting鈥 record. The MP who insisted he witnessed tenants stealing voter cards, but later tearfully recanted.听 Robocalls falsely telling voters in Liberal Irwin Cotlersa国际传媒 riding that he had retired. Robocalls, using names taken from the voter data base, misinforming electors about poll locations.

The architect of the 鈥淯nfair Elections Act鈥, 听none other than the reinvented Poilievre. Finance Minister Flaherty slipped through his 鈥渂ail-in鈥 bill, guaranteeing banks could not fail, (only their depositors), after which we treated him to a cross-Switzerland tour by taxi. Harper, from Davos, announced he was raising our OAS age, and lowering medical transfers.听 Sound better?

August 2024 鈥 different media vehicle but same scam. Poilievresa国际传媒 tour of Northern Ontario, enjoying fake bot rave reviews. 鈥淭he biggest crowds ever鈥 (Trump speak). D茅ja vu?听 You bet.

My question to you this week, in light of these vivid memories, considering that most of the present Official Opposition participated in the Harper government at the time, how do any of them stand up in the House, personally attacking the government and not feel like damn fools?
