It started with a couple of sneezes.
sa国际传媒 Mayor Tom Dyas, 63, returned to work today, saying he is 鈥渉ealthy and energized鈥 after a six-week health scare.聽
鈥淚n fact, with some adjustments to my diet and lifestyle, I may very well emerge from this even healthier than before,鈥 Dyas said in a release.聽
鈥淎s I return, my focus will continue to be on city business and delivering on the council priorities you told us are important,鈥 Dyas said. 鈥淲hile it may take me a little bit to ease into attending all social events and engagements, I am thankful for your ongoing support and dedication throughout my recovery.鈥
Dyas suffered a vertebral artery dissection, a potentially serious form of neck injury, while driving to work on the morning of Feb. 4.聽
鈥淚 stopped at a set of lights at Pandosy and Highway 97 and sneezed twice,鈥 Dyas said in the release. 鈥淭hinking nothing of it, I continued to City Hall. However, upon arriving, my condition quickly deteriorated. I initially decided to go home to lie down, but as I was driving, I felt something was seriously wrong and decided to go to the hospital instead.鈥
At KGH, Dyas said he was quickly diagnosed as suffering from a vertebral artery dissection, 鈥渕eaning an artery in the back of my head had split and was beginning to cause a clot鈥, he said.聽
The condition happens to about one in every 100,000 people, Dyas said. He was in hospital for a week before being discharged to recover at home.聽
鈥淚 can鈥檛 believe that after all the years of sports and physical activity, it was a sneeze that knocked me down,鈥 Dyas said. 鈥淣evertheless, I am so deeply grateful and blessed for the care and dedication of the entire team at KGH.鈥
鈥淲hile I recognize that artery dissections don鈥檛 immediately heal after a month, I am making a full recovery,鈥 Dyas said.聽
Dyas was back in the mayorsa国际传媒 chair at Mondaysa国际传媒 regular council meeting. Coun. Luke Stack had been filling in for Dyas.聽
