Thirty people have used the new program since it started in January.听
The option is available for patients with acute medical needs that might otherwise require hospitalization, provided it is deemed safe and appropriate, per a release. A team of health professionals provide daily visits, virtual consultations, and 24/7 support.听
鈥淕iving patients the option to recover in their own home improves not only their comfort and independence but also their overall experience with the health-care system,鈥 says Interior Health president and CEO Susan Brown.听
鈥淗ospital at Home combines quality and patient care beyond our acute faculties, because for some patients home is best,鈥 she said.听
The initiative was first reported by The sa国际传媒 Courier in January when IH officials made a presentation on the project to sa国际传媒-area politicians.听
Patients with cardiac and respiratory issues were among those expected to be the first users of the Hospital at Home program, IH officials said at the time. Any necessary equipment and medication is brought to the patientsa国际传媒 home after they鈥檙e assessed at the hospital, and a travelling nurse typically visits a patient every day.听
As required, patients also connect with other health care professionals such as doctors and pharmacists, physiotherapists, and rehabilitation assistants. Patients have a virtual call bell and phone number to connect with their care team at any time.听
Participants must live within a 20 minute drive of KGH, require medical care but be in stable condition, and be 17 or older.
Participation in 鈥楬ospital at Home鈥 is voluntary and if patients no longer want to remain at home, or their condition worsens, they can be admitted to KGH.听
