GREAT ALBUMS
Falling Into You (1996)
Keeping with the theme of 鈥渟upport Canada,鈥 this weeksa国际传媒 great album suggestion is likely already inside your carsa国际传媒 glove box -- Falling Into You by Celine Dion.
Itsa国际传媒 worth pulling out for a fresh listen.
This was the Quebec songbirdsa国际传媒 14th album --and fourth in the English language -- but for many it was their introduction to the soon-to-be global superstar.
Two years before Titanic, Falling Into You was packed with an all-star team of producers -- Jim Steinman (Bat Out of Hell, Total Eclipse of the Heart), David Foster (Whitney Houstonsa国际传媒 I Will Always Love You, the band Chicago) and Aldo Nova (Fantasy) and songwriters -- Diane Warren, Eric Carmen and Dan Hill.
The album begins with a Steinman epic -- Itsa国际传媒 All Coming Back to Me Now, a power ballad inspired by Wuthering Heights. It went unnoticed when released a decade earlier by Steinmansa国际传媒 girl-group Pandroasa国际传媒 Box, but it fit like a glove for Celine. Like all of Steinmansa国际传媒 mini-operas it was over-produced, three minutes too long, but also an enduring classic.
Her remake of All By Myself is a rare cover that exceeds the quality of the original. She also covers River Deep, Mountain High by Ike and Tina Turner.
The AM-radio friendly Because You Loved Me was written originally for a Robert Redford movie (one of 16 best original song nominations for Warren 鈥 the Susan Lucci of the Oscars).
For Canadian content and nostalgia, Seduces Me was written and co-produced by Dan Hill; Dreamin鈥 of You and I Love You both by Aldo Nova.
The quality of this album didn鈥檛 go unnoticed. It won Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards, hit No. 1 on both sides of the Atlantic and remains the fourth best selling album of all-time by a female artist. Tres bien, merci.
