City council is expected Monday to issue a development permit for construction of a new sports and leisure complex to replace the Parkinson recreation centre.
Some new details have been released about the $185 million sports and leisure complex that will replace the Parkinson recreation centre.

A total of 725 parking stalls will be provided on site while 309 new trees will be planted throughout the site, on which 204 existing trees will be maintained.

And while primary vehicle access to the new complex will be from a new entrance off Burtch Road, existing access off Harvey Avenue  and Spall Road/Parkinson Way will be retained.

City council is expected on Monday to issue the development permit for the massive project, the largest single civic undertaking in sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ 120-year history. Including site works, sports fields, new traffic lights, and parking, the total budget is $242.6 million.

Building aspects include a triple gymnasium, pools, hot tub, cold plunge, steam room and sauna, running track, child care, a small public library, and multi-purpose rooms. The revamped grounds will have six sports fields, 24 pickleball courts, connections to the Apple Bowl, Okanagan Rail Trail and Mill Creek, walking trails, and lawns.

Construction will get underway soon with completion in late 2027. The city has not yet decided if the new building will retain the name 'Parkinson', after a former mayor, or be given a new name.Â
